A rare and beautiful piece of Georgian life; a large oval, metal sconce which would have been used to reflect the light from a candle, placed into the candlestick, into the room.
Dating from the late 18th to early 19th century and salvaged from an English manor house, this beautiful piece consists of an oval metal plate, mounted on a wooden back which has been covered in gorgeous green velvet. A decorative, brass candlestick sits on the metal plate. A number of these would probably have been hung on a wall together to throw the light into a room in the days before electricity was invented.
This unusual, antique sconce has a beautifully worn appearance. The metal plate has lovely markings and the velvet, while still in good condition given it's age, has a faded and lightly worn feel. It has three small grooves at the top which suggests it may have had something else connected to it at some point.
A beautiful piece which would make a real statement on your walls. It could be easily hung using the hook on the back and could still be used for it's original, Georgian purpose in your home today.
