A beautiful large, antique black French crucifix dating from 1890.
The piece consists of a black wooden cross upon which has been mounted a smaller, wooden cross, bearing a metal Christ on the cross. The metal Christ has a beautiful rustic, worn patina. The plaque at the bottom of the cross has an inscription which tells us that the crucifix is in remembrance of the 'Second Class Grateful Students First Division July 1890' which dates this piece to an exact month and year.
There is some slight damage to the statue of Christ's left hand, the very top of two of his fingers are missing and the nail in his hand is slightly bent. Other than that, this piece is in a lovely time worn condition in keeping with its age and has a hook on the back so it can be easily hung.
