A beautifully distressed, antique base for a French glass dome or cloche which would have been used to make a Globe de Mariee. It was a tradition in 18th and 19th century France for newly married couples to create these as a way to display and protect items or wedding souvenirs, chosen to reflect their love for each other and the beginnings of their life together. The Globe de Mariee would be kept and treasured through the years as a record of their marriage. It consisted of a glass dome on a wooden base like this in which they would place their treasured possessions.
The glass dome which sat on top of this base has long gone but the stands alone are beautiful and are ideal for displaying your own small treasures, statues or sculptures. This piece has a lovely distressed feel; there are some old woodworm holes, the wood is split in a couple of places and the black paint has flaked off over the years which has created a beautiful patina.
